Pardon Me, could you repeat that?

I couldn't believe my ears today as I was listening to the news on the car radio. A Church of England Vicar from York was being interviewed because he said it was okay for people to shoplift if they were in need as long as they shoplifted from someone that could afford it like a multi national store.

I appreciate the mans sympathy for those who find themselves in poverty and perhaps the church should be doing more to meet the needs of the poorest in society but to encourage people to break one of God's commandments is unbelievable.

Who are we to amend the laws of God, who gives us the right to add circumstances to God's word where it is okay to disobey God. To God obedience is paramount. When Saul took the Amalekite livestock rather than slaying them as God commanded he claimed he did it so as he could make a sacrifice to God. God told him through Samuel the prophet that to obey was better than to sacrifice.

Let us not tinker with God's word!

'Thou shalt not steal.' Exodus 20 v15
